The right train
I had a fantastic time in Japan, I haven’t
been there for some time and it was
good to be back. During the long flight, I
practised my Japanese. It had become a
bit rusty, but I knew that I would need it
at the train station. Many more exciting
things were bound to happen as well. The
award of the Golden Concave, the visit to
the exhibition of the WBC and the Omiya
Bonsai Village.
Our hotel was close to Ueno train station,
so it would only take a few minutes by
train to get to the Saitama Super Arena,
the main venue for the WBC event. The
Japanese train system is very efficient
and fast, only finding the right track and
train can take more time than the whole
trip. We managed to get there after asking
many times in my best Japanese if this
train really was going to Saitama, and so
it did.
In the afternoon, the official opening took
place in a grand theatre. The very VIP
guests were the Imperial Prince Akishi-
no-no-miya and his wife. We were told
not to move from our seats as a safety
measure. After traditional Japanese drum
sessions, his Imperial Prince opened the
World Bonsai Convention, lots of music
and traditional Japanese singing followed
when, finally, the special demo of Master
Masahiko Kimura started. I had a press
seat at the side, but manoeuvred myself
up to the VIP seats right at the front so
that I could make close shots of his demo,
which was, as always, fascinating. He was
inspired by the Chinese rock landscapes
and made a rock planting on a self-made
rock. The audience could ask questions
while Ryan Neil, his former apprentice,
translated.
Then on the next day it was off to the
big exhibition — you could walk over the
crowds as if the HMS store had a sale, but
it was fantastic.
One of the demonstrators was Bjorn
Bjorholm. On stage, he worked on an
incredible tree. Master Kimura climbed
on stage and gave his approval. He would
probably do exactly the same for Bjorn's
masterclass article in this issue.
Another highlight, the award of the
Golden Concave, made on the second day
during an official 'BF' reception. It was
presented to Mario Komsta's hornbeam
(Carpinus turczaninowii).He became a
father just as the official announcement
was made, but he still managed to come
over to Japan for the presentation.
