Can’t get enough of it
I was already working on this issue when
proof copies of the previous one arrived.
It was the special edition with the two
Japanese girls on the cover and it carried
all the memories of that great event in it.
And now I was so excited to see it all in
print. The responses to that issue were
overwhelming, which strengthened our
confidence that we had made the
right decision to add
in those extra pages to
cover the World Bonsai
Convention.
I took a huge number
of photos during that
event, so I can treat you,
dear reader, to some more
amazing bonsai from the
WBC exhibition in Japan.
Heike van Gunst, one of the
participants of the Bonsai
Focus Japan Tour, gives an
her first time visit to Japan.
Another first is that we have organized
a new tour to the famous Kokufu-ten
exhibition in February 2018. It is with the
same charming guide, Seiko Fukui, who
received many rave comments from the
participants of the previous tour.
The tour to the Kokufu-Ten exhibition is,
again, promising to be a special trip, as
we have not only planned a visit to both
Kokufu-ten shows, which will show two
completely different sets of bonsai, but

by Pieter van Uden, a local bonsai artist
who has done very extravagant work for
us in the past. See how he makes a huge

bulky mugo pine. While, Morten Albek
contemplates on the shohin displays
of this year’s Nöelanders Trophy show,
which, as always, came up trumps with
its excellent shohin.

This is one of the best bonsai collections
in Japan. Included, of course, is Kunio
Kobayashi's garden so it is an extensive
visit to the Omiya bonsai gardens and
its museum — all part of this tour. Extra
special is a visit to the temples of Nikko,
I was there myself couple of years ago.
The main temple is situated
on a hill planted with more
than a thousand Hinoki
cypresses, coming from
Tokyo it was like entering a
different world, something
truly magical. So, look for
