ne of the great things about the hobby of flying scale aircraft
modelling is that designs do not ‘date’. Ten, twenty or thirty
years on from first appearance of a scale design either in kit
form or as a published plan, it’s still the same design in
airframe structure and, largely, requires much the same
equipment to get it into the air.
All this is in stark contrast to non-scale aeromodelling disciplines
where progressively improving flying capabilities prompt redundancy.
Our full size free plan feature this month repeats a scale model design
by the late David Boddington, which appeared back in
February 1997 issue of Aviation Modeller
International. In terms of structure, motive power
and operating equipment, it’s reappearance in this
issue of FSM could just as relevantly been the
design’s first appearance. The only difference

But as it happens, FSM’s editor has had a fully

from a time not long after the first appearance of
Boddo’s design.
Retrieved from its perch and dusted down, this time we were able to
quickly undertake an electric power conversion, a simple enough
modification that is covered in this extended feature.
The full size Staaken Flitzer is the creation of Lynn Williams, brother of
13-times World Aerobatic Champion, the late Neil Williams. Lynn
himself, has been an aeromodeller and the airframe of his fascinating
little 18 ft. wingspan design indicates an extension of aeromodelling
experience on a grander scale for Homebuilders with limited facilities
and tools. Since 1996, Lynn has been developing the design with a
range of variants for which a total more that 360 plan sets have been
sold, worldwide and the progression of this success story is traced in
our feature that accompanies our model construction article.
