EARD AT THE
I
’m writing this on the Friday before the August Bank
Holiday. Normally I would be looking forward to the hectic
three days that are the Power Nationals but as you are
only too well aware these have been cancelled due to the
Pandemic Lockdown. The only crumb of comfort I can find
is that the ground on the blasted heath is already sodden and
the weather forecast is far from ideal – we are not missing
some golden days!
Elsewhere in Hangar Doors you will see that competition
organisers are being creative and trying to restart things where
they can be run as socially distanced, ‘Covid Compliant’
events. Some classes such as CL Combat defy social
distancing and will continue to wait…
Fingers crossed we are on track for the Scale Weekend
at Old Warden on the 19/20 September. Do be prepared to
implement social distancing as instructed by the marshals,
and bring face masks and hand sanitiser. Whatever the event,
check before travelling!

RETURN OF CL AEROBATICS
At last the green shoots of a return to
normality. Thanks to Steve White for this
quick update on the first tentative steps.
Next month we’ll have his report from the

Well, to say this year has NOT gone
according to plan, is pretty much
an understatement. A small number
of events still stand this year as we
negotiate the return. At club level,
informal gatherings have paved the way
to formulate an agreed system of safely
adhering to the social distancing rules.
So it was that a few members of the
Wharfedale club in Northern England
invited a small number pilots to their
beautiful flying field in the stunning
Yorkshire Dales on the 19th July. The
weather held fair, if a little breezy, and
the flying was… well… it was good to
get out and remind ourselves what it was
all about - let’s leave it at that shall we?!
Alan Watson provided the judging duties
on the day.
A few new projects were out on
show and it was great to see a buzz of
enthusiasm stirred by these - for some
it has been a productive few months, at
least in the workshop - Bravo!
A week later and a second soiree, this
time at the National Flying Centre. The
weather was much the same - if anything
a little more challenging - some rather
increased, 15mph plus, laminar winds
were endured, testing the pilots who
flew. The judges, John Bonner and Ken
Reeves dutifully stood and provided the
days critiques.
An interesting point I noted was the
return to a prevalence of IC power,
some beautifully tuned pipes and some
more traditional set ups were seen -
the debate continues as to the reason
behind this seeming resurgence. I just
can’t help it, I love the smell, sound, feel
and satisfaction of a perfectly executed
engine run!

Buckminster on 19/20 September.

BMFA NATIONAL CENTRE UPDATE
BMFA Buckminster continues to move
towards normal operation. The centre
re-opened for season ticket access in
early July, and in a second phase has
returned to self-contained camping
along with some low key/low number
events.
In line with the overall cautious
approach the final phase of the move
towards “normal” operations has been
a return to day ticket flying and access
to the various indoor spaces from the
3rd of August, and the Centre and
will be moving away from the “special
measures” implemented during the
lockdown period. This means that the
normal site rules, operating practices,
schedules and timings revert to those
provided on the website and directly to
all season ticket holders.
As always, the important advice
is to check the website status
(nationalcentre.bmfa.org) before
travelling and if in any doubt that your
chosen activity is supported then call
in advance on the direct number (0116
2441091).
One of the first events was the “Ajax
and Achilles” event on Monday 24th
August, run by John Ashmole of SAM
35 and sponsored by the Cleemac
Club. Covid precautions included a
“Remote Control” (one visitor at a time)
cleansing fluid, no entry fees, no flight
cards, and masks clearly in evidence.
Over thirty entries were spread over
the three classes (Cloud Tramp was
also flown) and competition was close,
as flyers took full advantage of their
first visit to the field for many months.
In addition, a good number of sports
flyers and trimmers joined in, helping to
make the day a great success.

‘COVID
COMPLIANT’
BARTON CL EVENTS
The Coronavirus/Covid 19 lockdown
has cancelled the original 2020
calendar of CL events at Barton MFC,
but John Bradley informed me that
a small number of events are being
trialed for the rest of the year.
Dick Hart ran two ‘Covid
Compliant’ Speed Weekends, on
27/28 June and 1/2 August, and has
others planned for the Sunday and
Monday of the August Bank Holiday
and 26/27 September. The first two
were limited to Club Members and
immediate family, numbers were kept
below 30 with no individual groups
bigger than 6. Any models which
required a pitman and assistant
had to be configured so that they
could remain at least 2m apart, or
1m+ if they wore masks. Everyone
on the field had their temperature
checked, were required to sign an
attendance register giving their
details, were required to regularly use
hand sanitizer, and were instructed
to obey social distancing rules at all
times. Non-member competitors will
be permitted to attend the next two
meetings.
We obviously cannot fly competitive
team race because the pilots
cannot maintain social distancing.
However, following consultation on
the Barton forum concerning how we
might overcome the pilot problem
we came up with a set of rules for
Precision Team Racing against the
watch, and successfully ran the first
competition under those rules on 16th
August. The same ‘Covid Compliant’
restrictions on competitors as for
the speed meetings were in force.
Another meeting is planned for
4th October, but, as with all the
scheduled meetings, whether or not
it takes place will depend on the
restrictions in force at the time,

BUCKMINSTER FREE FLIGHT GALA
The FF Gala planned to make the most
of the Buckminster site will be on one
day only depending upon weather
forecast - October 3rd or 4th or 5th.
Confirmation of date will be made on
Thursday before and can be discovered
by telephoning the CD that evening
or visiting the Buckminster website
