Windows Before installing the l^ersonal Student Tutor, it is important to understand that there are three ways to use this program. First, students can use the Student application by itself without electronic monitoring by the instructor. Secondly, students can use the Student application and the instructor can use the Instructor application to monitor their progress, all on one machine. 'I'hirdly, students and tcachcivs can use different machines that are networked, which allows teachers to monitor students’ progress on other machines. These tliree uses correspond to thi ee different installation procedures. A, Windows Installation — Student Application only, non-networked Follow these steps, if you wish students to use the Personal Student Tutor without electronic monitoring by instructor(s). 1 . Close any programs that might be open. 2 . Insert the Personal Student Tutor CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 3. Double-click (or open) IVIy Computer on the desktop. 4. Double-click on the CD-ROM drive icon. 5. Double-click on the student folder. 6. Locate Set-up.exe in the window and double-click on it. The Welcome win- dow appears. 7 . The Welcome window for the installer should appear. If it does not, the com- puter will take you through an installation of Internet Explorer S.O and/or Quick l ime 4.1 which are necessary for the Personal Student lutor to oper- ate. After those components arc installed, the computer automatically re- boots. You should then go back to Step 2. 8. Click next. The Choose Destination Location step is presented. Instead of clicking next in steps 8 and 9, you may select a different location by clicking Browse instead. But we recommend that you keep the locations offered by the installation program. 2 9. Click next. The Choose a New Book Location window opens. 10. Click next. Lhe files are now being installed. When this is done, the Setup Complete window appears. IT. Click Finish. The Student application will automatically open, unless you uncheck the two boxes in the window. 12 . F rom now on, you can open the application by going to the Start Menu, selecting Programs, then to PST, and selecting P ST Student Tutorial. For information on how to use the program, please see the Student and Instructor Quick Start guide. J5. Windows Installation — Instructor application and the Student Application, non-networked If you wish students to use the Personal Student lutor and monitor their progress using the Instructor application on one machine, follow these steps. You will be going through 2 installations; the first will install the installers and the second will install the Instructor application. The Instructor installation automatically installs the Student application as well, since the two versions must work together. Throughout this procedure, the person performing the installations will be referred to as the Administrator. The Administrator will be able to add or remove instructors from the network. 1 . Close any programs that might be open. 2 . Insert the Personal Student Tutor CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 3. Locate the My Computer icon on the desktop and double-click (or open) on it. 4. In the My Computer window, locate the CD-ROM icon and double-click on it. 5. Locate the PST folder and double-click on it. 6. Now locate Set-up.exe in the window and double-click on it. The Welcome window appears. (Although the screen title says PST Network Installer, you will not be networking different machines in this procedure.) 3 7 . The Welcome window for the installer should appear. If it does not, the com- puter will take you through an installation of Internet Explorer 5,0 and/or Quick Time 4.1 which arc necessary for the Personal Studejit Tutor to oper- ate. After those components are installed, the computer automatically re- boots. Yon should then go back to Step 2. 8. Click next. The Choose a New Book Location window opens. 9. Click Browse. The Choose Folder window opens. 10. In the path box, type C:\PST_.Book_Data. Click OK, then click Yes. 11. Click next. The Choose Student Tutorial installer Destination window opens. 12. Click Browse. The Choose Folder window opens. 13. In the path box, type C:\PST_Student_lnstaller. Click OK, then click Yes. 14. Click next. The Choose histructor Tutorial Installer Destination window opens. 15. Click Browse. The Choose Folder window opens. 16. In the path box, type C:\PSTJnstructorJnstaller. Click OK, then click Yes. 17. Click next. The Choose Book Manager Destination window opens. 18. Click next. After the various folders have been installed on your hard-drive, the Setup Complete window appears. 19. Click Finish. 20 . Now that the installers have been installed, you need to install the Instructor version. Double-click on My Computer. 21. Double-click on the C: Drive icon. 22. Locate the PSTJnstructor_lnstaller folder and double-click on it. 23. Locate the Setup.exe icon and double-click on it. 24. Click next. The Choose Destination Location window opens. 25. Click next. Files are now being installed. When this is done, the Setup Complete window appears. 26. Click Finish. The Instructor application and a read-me file will automatically open, unless you uncheck the two boxes in the window. 4 27. You have now installed both the Student and Instructor applications. From now on, you can open either application by going to the Start Menu, selecting Programs, then to PST, and selecting PST Student Tutorial or PST Instructor Version. 28. The first person to log in to the Instructor application is assumed to be the Administrator, Use the following log in: User name: default Password: The password field should be left blank. 29. You will then be asked to change your password from blank to something else. (The Administrator’s username will always be default.) The Instructor application will then open. 30. The Administrator can now set up instructors, so they can log into the Instructor application with their own user name and password. You can do this by going to File and selecting Add Instructor. You don’t need to enter all the information; only a username and password are necessary. 31. You must give each instructor their username and password before they can use the program. 32. Once instructors have logged into the Instructor application, they can set up their class rosters. To do so, they should go to File and select New Class. After they have named their class, a Class Roster window will appear. At this point, they can add students to this class by going to File and selecting Add Students. They do not need to enter all the information; only a username and password are necessary. 33 . When students log into the Student application, they may use the username and password given to them by the instructor, or they may simply enter their own. Vhey will be asked to select their own class. The program will display the classes that have been set up by the instructor in the Instructor application. 5 34. Instructors can view the details of a student’s progress by going to File, select- ing Open Class and selecting a particular class. In the class roster window, they may double-click on a student’s name to view how they are doing in the practice and quizzes. Windows Installation — networked Follow these instructions if you wish to use the Personal Student Tutor on a net- work server and monitor their progress using the Instructor application on multi- ple machines.
