he November issue of SAM is usually the
one we’d have prepared to take to
Telford and have on sale at Scale
ModelWorld, one of the highlights of the year
for me , and of course for so many of our
readers. Telford encompasses so many
aspects of our hobby, bringing together
modellers of every salt, and with so many
different approaches as to what constitutes a
scale model aircraft and why. The
competition, of course, presents scale
modelling at its most exacting, and the
traders collectively add up to the best
shopping experience you could hope to
find,
but for me the stars of the show are the club
and SIG stands, where the collective weight of
knowledge and experience showcase all the
many different reasons why we collect and
build model aircraft.
For some the build is everything –
replicating every detail and nuance of a
subject and creating as near a perfect
finished
result as possible. For others it’s the history
behind the aircraft that matters the most, and
the
finished
result is the end result of
painstaking research to present a model, or a
collection, that tells a story. Some of us build
models because we like aircraft. Some like
aircraft because we build models. Everyone
has their own way of doing things and what
the displays at Telford demonstrate to me is
that there is no ‘right’ way of building models,
but that everyone will do their own thing in
their own way, and that most of all everyone
has something to bring to the party.
SAM for many readers has always been the
go to source for ideas and inspiration, which
is why moving forward we are keen to hear
from modellers looking ‘beyond the box’-
Scratchbuilding, converting, or cross-kitting
to achieve that unmarketable variant that will
never see a mainstream kit. Most of all I want
SAM to echo that diversity so prevalent on
the club stands at Telford, and one that I have
voiced here before: ‘look what
you
can do’…
