Along with the Spitfire the Fokker Dr.1 must surely be one of the most iconic combat aircraft so it is
something of a mystery why it has been so poorly replicated in 1:32 scale. Masters of the World War One
aircraft kit, Wingnut Wings always said that they would not release kits of the populist subjects like the
Dr.1 and yet the Dreidecker eventually found its way into production with Wingnut Wings with pre-release
publicity having been sent out, anticipation was high. Then came the shock news of the closure of
Wingnut Wings and it seemed that the Fokker was lost along with the enormous Lancaster and Handley
Page.
Happily for us Wingnut Wings had contracted Meng Models to manufacture the tooling for the Fokker and
following the closure of the Wingnut Wings operation the kit has been released as a part of the Meng
range. Ironically the kit Wingnut Wings said they would never release has proved to be the swansong of
the much admired company. The internet has been buzzing with conspiracy theories about this kit but it
is the Wingnut Wings design, the differences being that ‘early’ and ‘late’ aircraft are bundled into one kit,
the decal sheet is not as expansive as the Wingnut Wings version, the instruction booklet is far more
basic and it has a different style of boxart. Bizarrely the boxart seemed to be the cause of much upset for
the conspiracy theorists. My concern is always more about what’s in the box than the picture printed on it
but there you go.
