One of the brightest stars in JG 54' s
firmament during the early months
of the campaign against the Soviet
Union was Leutnant, later
Oberleutnant,
Max.
Hellmuth
Ostermann. This ex·Zerstdrer pilot
had been credited with just nine kills
prior to the launch of
Barbarossa.
However,
against the
Red
Air Force
he revealed his natural ability as an
outstanding dogfighter. His score
began to escalate rapidly as the
'Green
Hearts' supported the
German Army' s advance towards
Leningrad. Jim

with his wingman
when they came to
the
aid of a
group of

The dive-bombers had
done their work well, as witness the
columns of smoke rising
from
the
enemy
target
on
the
far side of the
lake. But
now
the
returning
Stukas
found themselves under attack by
Polikarpov 1
·153
fighters. These agile
biplanes were a common adversary
of the
'
Green Hearts' during the
opening stages of Barbarossa, and
many were included among the final
tally of 93 Soviet aircraft which
Ostermann claimed destroyed before
he was himself killed in action on 9
August 1942
