INTRODUCTION
This second volume of the planned series covers a period of 14 months,
dealing with a wide spectrum of activities. Reactions to Volume 1 have been
largely very gratifying for the team, but have raised some issues which we
are trying to deal with.
1) Sources
Some readers have indicated that they had expected a considerably more
comprehensive listing of our sources than the Bibliography included in the
first volume. While in many cases our sources are similar, each member of
the team has had their own particular lines of enquiry, many of them
stretching over long periods from the 1960s onwards. Appended here
therefore are notes relevant to each of us, indicating the basis of our research.
2) Addenda and Corrections
In a work of this nature we fully accept that there will be occasions when we
get things wrong, or leave out matters which should have been included. We
are very pleased and grateful for any such issue to be brought to our attention.
It is our intention to incorporate such material appropriately within later
volumes. We anticipate in the first instance that such a section will be
included in Volume 3, dealing with any such errors or omissions in the first
two.
In drawing such matters to our attention, however, we ask readers to ‘treat
us gently’. It needs to be kept in mind, perhaps, that no member of the team is
a full-time professional author. We are all lifetime enthusiasts who operate in
our spare time or retirement, and none of us is any longer in the first flush of
youth. In short we are getting old and we tend to hurt easily!
3) Coverage
The question has been asked as to whether we include all operations, or only
selective ones. The latter is certainly nearer to our intention. We consider that
in a planned seven volumes to include all sorties etc where nothing of
particular significance occurred would produce an indigestible amount of
potentially not very interesting information.
We seek therefore, to include all those operational actions where
something of note occurred such as an aircraft shot down or a victory
claimed, a bombing raid of significant effectiveness, the sinking of a ship, or
other events of this kind. Where large numbers of sorties were flown of a
similar nature to each other, or where significant results cannot be said to
have been achieved, we present examples supported by a general synopsis of
