o matter how productive
I’ve been in my building,
I always leave Scale
ModelWorld inspired.
The UK’s premier model show has
its own distinct format that differs
from similar events worldwide.
Clubs and special interest groups
constitute the majority of displays,
while the number of new product
announcements (such as Airfix’s
1/72 Vulcan – see news pages)
never fails to impress. For me, this
‘broad church’ approach is crucial
to the event’s success.
Although there’s an
understandable focus on the
competition, the main highlight for
me is chatting with modellers from
around the world about their builds
and upcoming projects, even if I
can’t devote as much time to this
as I’d like.
My personal thanks go to the
IPMS volunteers who organised
this year’s Scale ModelWorld, which
– to my eyes, at least – was one of
the smoothest running to date.
Congratulations are also in order
for several
AMW
contributors,
namely Nick Shuttleworth, Richard
Spreckley and Chris Jones, for
their awards and commendations
in the competition.
As the first magazine of a new
year, you’ll notice a slight ‘tweak’
to the contents. We’ll be running a
series of articles on basic modelling
skills – in part, this is due to
requests from current readers, but
it’s also aimed at new entrants
to the hobby. These will
be accompanied by Back to Basics
panels in certain features, such
as this issue’s Airfix 1/72 Typhoon
Mk.Ib build, highlighting how even
the most skilled builders rely on
getting these aspects right.
I’m also delighted to include two
builds of recently tooled offerings,
namely Academy’s 1/35 AH-1Z
Viper and relative newcomer Gecko
Models’ 1/35 A10 Cruiser tank. And
the Your Airfix section makes a
welcome return.
