Lawful interception plays a crucial role in helping law enforcement agencies
to
combat
criminal
activity.
Lawful
interception
of
public
telecommunications systems in each country is based on national legislation
in that country.
The purpose of standardization of lawful
interception in European Telecommunications
Standards Institute (ETSI) is to facilitate the
economic realization of lawful interception that
complies with the national and international
conventions and legislation. The Technical
Committee on Lawful Interception (TC LI) is the
leading body for lawful interception standardization within ETSI. Lawful
Interception standards have also been developed by ETSI technical bodies
like AT, TISPAN (SPAN and TIPHON) TETRA and by 3GPP.
The role of TC-LI in these partnerships is in the development and
publication of handover interfaces, and of rules for the carriage of
technology specific interception or retained data delivery across these
interfaces.

Pim van Stam:
is working for ten years for
ISP's. Since 2002 for the NBIP (National
Service Organization of Internet Providers)
which is a foundation of Internet Providers.
The NBIP takes care of the lawful interception
on behalf of 80 ISP's in the Netherlands. An
investigation for delivering services on data
retention is on going. Pim is leading the NBIP
office from 2005
.
Koen Jaspers
is editor of Li and DR
requirements documents. On a national
basis he coordinated the development of
national LI specifications and later the
adoption of ETSI LI specifications to Dutch
requirements.
