DO WORRIES EVER
get the best of you?
I would like to say that never happens to me,
but inevitably anxiety crowds in. I close my
eyes to pray in the morning, hoping for some
blissful release, and the worries make their
chattering racket heard. Like the birds outside.
No surprise then that Jesus mentioned birds
when it comes to worries. “Look at the birds of the air,” Jesus said,
“they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them” (Matthew 6:26). Or when it comes
to fretting about having enough to wear: “Consider the lilies of
the field, how they grow,” He said, “they neither toil nor spin, yet
I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one
of these” (Matthew 6:28–29).
The other day I had to stop and truly consider the birds—robins
flitting among the brush, gathering twigs to build their nests;
hummingbirds sucking nectar from the flowers; raptors cruising
the sky, ready to pounce on dinner. They may not worry, but
they sure do work hard, tirelessly. Same with the lilies of the field,
drawing up the sun’s rays and nutrients from the soil.
It made me realize how easy it is to confuse work with worry.
Jesus gives me a new way of thinking about it.
Yes, Rick, keep up
the good work. Just let go of the fretting.
